An online car insurance status check is now fast, easy, and free. More importantly, it helps you make sure your insurance policy remains valid and your insurance coverage continues to work properly.  You may also check whether vehicle insurance is current or expired by entering the vehicle registration number on the various online portals. These include the VAHAN (Parivahan Sewa) portal, the mParivahan mobile application, the IIB portal, or direct access through ACKO. Being aware of your insurance validity status helps you avoid RTO fines, legal penalties, and also not driving the vehicle without insurance.

This guide provides an overview of vehicle insurance validity and outlines various methods to check your status online. It doesn't matter whether you are trying to see before starting on a road trip, are at RTO offices, or renewing your policy; you will find everything required for that here.

What is Vehicle Insurance Validity?
Jump Tag Icon

In India, car insurance policies usually have validity periods as explained:

  • Annual Policy: This lasts up to a period of 12 months from the day it is issued.

  • 3-Year Long-Term Third-Party Policy: Will remain valid for 36 months, is compulsory for new cars, and is cheaper per year.

  • 5-Year Long-Term Third-Party Policy: Valid for 60 months, which is less common; mostly used by corporate fleets.

  • Comprehensive Policy: It is normally an annual one, but long-term can also be done (the same 3/5-year terms)

Active and Expired Statuses of a Car Policy

If a policy is active, it means your insurer will cover you in the event of an accident, as the period of protection has not yet ended. However, an expired policy means that your policy has finished, and your insurer will not pay anything in case of an accident. Driving a car without insurance is a violation of the law.

Grace Period and Renewal

Generally, most insurers leave you a grace period to renew a policy without losing the benefits (like No Claim Bonus) associated with uninterrupted coverage, typically of 30 days following the policy's expiry date. Nevertheless, even if your policy expired, if you drive during that period, it will be considered non-compliant. Therefore, we recommend renewal well before the date of expiry.

Why is a Validity Check Important?

Having an out-of-date policy while driving may have the following effects: RTO fine (may be ₹1, 000 or more), legal trouble, denial of claims, suspension of your driving license, and seizure of the car. By checking your validity regularly, you will ensure that not only are you on top of things legally, but also that you're shielded by your policy.

Is it possible to do RTO insurance check online?

Yes, one can check the status of their vehicle insurance by simply visiting parivahan.gov.in or by using the mParivahan app. Enter the vehicle registration number (VRN) to instantly view whether the vehicle is insured or not, the name of the insurer, and the expiry date.

How to check car insurance validity?

One can check the validity status of their vehicle insurance via the Vaahan portal (parivahan.gov.in), the mobile application mParivahan, one's insurance company's site or app, or via Parivahan Sewa. Just provide your VRN number along with the vehicle chassis number.

How to find the insurance policy number by vehicle number?

You can go to the VAHAN or Parivahan Sewa portal, provide your VRN along with the chassis number, and the system gives out your insurer name and policy number. In a different case, you may contact the customer service of your insurer with your VRN, or check your policy document or renewal letter.

How can I check my insurance details in Parivahan?

Visit the site https://parivahan.gov.in and input your Vehicle Registration Number, e.g. DL-01AB1234. You may optionally enter the chassis/engine number, then click search. You will have the details on policy status, insurer, policy number, expiry year, and coverage type instantly.

How to download the insurance copy online?

Log in to your insurer's portal or application. Click on Policy Document/Download Documents. Select Certificate of Insurance, and click on Download. Alternatively, via the Parivahan Sewa webpage, after you log in, locate your details and click on Print/Download PDF to get your government stamp.

Why is it important to check my vehicle's insurance status online?

Driving a car with expired insurance is an act that contradicts the Motor Vehicles Act. You might be penalised with a fine of ₹ 1,000- ₹ 2,000, in addition to license suspension. Claims made without valid insurance will be rejected, and the victims will be able to directly sue you if a third party is involved. Verifying takes only 30 seconds and protects you from legal/financial issues.

What information do I need to check my insurance status online?

Required details: Vehicle Registration Number (VRN). Also, you can provide one of the following: chassis number, engine number, or policy number (which would make the search process faster). For insurer dashboards, enter the policy number or use the combination of the VRN and the registered mobile number.

Are there any charges for checking my vehicle's insurance status online?

No, Parivahan Sewa, VAHAN, mParivahan app, and all insurer portals are entirely free of charge. They are government-mandated or at least offered for free. Only when you renew your policy or add a new type of cover are you asked to make a payment. You won't be charged anything to check the status of your existing policy.

How do I check which type of car insurance I have (third-party vs comprehensive)?

Log in to your insurer's website/app via your policy number then navigate to Policy Details, and Third-Party will pop up if your plan includes liability-only. In Policy Details, Comprehensive will be selected for a plan that covers your vehicle, too. You can even check whether a policy is liability-only or comprehensive from the first page of the policy document or renewal letter.

Can I check my vehicle insurance status without my policy number?

Yes, the government portals (Parivahan Sewa, VAHAN, mParivahan) allow VRN (Vehicle Registration Number) alone without the need of the policy number for various services like the one to be discussed now. They get synchronised with the national registry and give the detailed results immediately.

What should I do if my insurance status shows expired?

Contact your insurer straight away, do not drive. Log on to your insurer's site or use the app to renew. Fill in your vehicle registration mark/VIN, choose the appropriate coverage type, and make the payment. Your driving history and uninterrupted insurance will not be affected if you renew within 30 days, so your No Claim Bonus (NCB) is protected.

Can I check my car insurance status using my chassis number?

Yes, the VAHAN portal, Parivahan Sewa, and the mParivahan app will allow you to use the Chassis Number in place of VRN. Look it up in your registration certificate book or on the vehicle registration sticker.

How do I know which insurance company my car is insured with?

Visit the VAHAN or Parivahan Sewa portals and type your VRN, and the name of your insurer will show up directly. To find your insurer's name, refer to the renewal letter, the cover page of your policy, or the confirmation email. If you want to check who your current insurer is, then simply check your VRN at ACKO.com, and the tracker of ACKO will display it.

How can ACKO help me track and renew my car insurance status?

ACKO's tracker (available on ACKO.com or app) gives you a complete overview of your policy details, validity, NCB, and reminds you of the policy renewal in 60/30/7 days prior to expiration. A one-click renewal will take only 2 minutes!
