UID 8192 | T&Cs apply*

Insure your brand new bike

New bikes are eligible for a bundled comprehensive plan that includes 1-year own damage cover and 5-year TP (third-party) cover.

What is comprehensive bike insurance?

Comprehensive bike insurance is a policy that covers both your bike and a third party in a single plan. It consists of own damage cover (OD), which takes care of your losses resulting from various incidents like theft, accidents, fire, natural disasters, and man-made damage, as well as third party cover (TP), where you are protected by your insurer if you face legal and financial liability for harming someone or damaging their belongings. You can also choose add-on covers such as a zero-depreciation clause, roadside assistance, and engine cover. Therefore, a comprehensive bike insurance policy will provide the widest protection and greater peace of mind while travelling on Indian roads.

Comprehensive vs third-party vs own damage bike insurance

There are three types of bike insurance policies: comprehensive, third-party, and own damage. Third-party covers liability to others, own damage covers your bike, and comprehensive combines both for complete protection.

If getting a new bike, opt for full coverage without depreciation and return to invoice. Full coverage without depreciation is less expensive, since parts are most expensive when new, while return-to-invoice will cover the entire on-road cost if the bike is stolen.

What comprehensive bike insurance covers

The comprehensive plan provides the most protection for your bike compared to any other plan available in India. This is exactly what it protects: damage to your bike, third-party liability, and gaps you need to be aware of before making a claim.

Comprehensive bike insurance covers the cost of repairs on your own bike if there is an accident, skid, or overturn. Third-party insurance does not cover any costs of repairing your own bike at all.

  • Covers single-vehicle accidents: skidding, potholes, road dividers

  • Covers two-vehicle collisions, even when you are at fault

  • Covers bodywork, frame, suspension, and mechanical parts damaged in the crash

  • ACKO settles cashless directly with the workshop; you don't pay the garage upfront

Claim tip: Capture pictures of all sides of the damage that has been caused to your bike. The ACKO mobile app lets you complete your claim in just 5 minutes!

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

In case of theft of your bike, the comprehensive policy will pay you the total Insured Declared Value (IDV), which is the current market value of your bike less depreciation. There will be no coverage from third-party insurance in such a case.

  • IDV will be paid in full once the Non-Traceable Certificate is issued by the police

  • Part theft - wheels, mirrors, seats, is also claimable

  • Always opt for a higher IDV while purchasing the bike

  • Have the FIR copy, two sets of keys, and the RC book available for processing the claim

Claim tip: File an FIR within 24 hours of the discovery of the theft. ACKO Insurance will require the FIR number to initiate the theft claim process. Delay in registering the FIR may delay the process.

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

Comprehensive cover pays for fire damage, whether caused by an engine fire, fuel line burst, electrical short circuit, or a lightning strike. Third-party insurance does not cover any fire damage to your own bike.

  • Engine fires and fuel leaks that ignite are covered

  • Electrical short circuits, causing fire, are covered

  • Lightning strike damage is treated as a natural disaster under comprehensive cover

  • Arson or deliberate fire is excluded; accidental fire is covered

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

Comprehensive coverage includes natural disasters and is often overlooked as a valuable feature. In a flood, a third-party-only bike is completely unprotected, whereas comprehensive insurance will cover all repairs to the bike.

  • Covered incidents include: Flood, Cyclone, Earthquake, Landslide, Storm, Hailstorm

  • Any damage due to falling trees/debris during the course of a storm is covered.

  • Take photographs/videos of all damages before the water subsides or debris is removed.

Claim tip: Do not turn the engine on after flooding. Trying to start the engine after it is flooded results in irreparable hydrostatic lock, which falls under exclusions of a typical comprehensive policy. Get Engine Protect for this coverage.

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party
  • Damage to your two-wheeler caused by events such as vandalism, riots, strikes, etc.

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

With comprehensive insurance, ACKO settles the repair charges directly with the garage. You approve the repairs and get your motorcycle back - no lump sum to pay, no waiting for money back.

  • More than 5,400 authorised workshops all over India accept ACKO settlement

  • Not required to pay to the garage and then claim the money back

  • Also support non-cashless garages – make the payment and claim the money back within 7 days

  • Cost of parts replaced from the workshop gets paid at the actual cost (unless Zero Dep is active)

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

If your bike causes any harm or injury to another person, Indian law will deem you completely liable for their medical expenses with no maximum cap for liability. Comprehensive insurance, such as third-party insurance, covers you completely for this liability.

  • No monetary cap on bodily injury or death liability under the Motor Vehicles Act

  • Covers hospital costs, long-term rehabilitation, and compensation to victims' families

  • Your insurer provides legal defence representation at the tribunal

  • Riding without at least this cover is a criminal offence, with fines up to Rs. 2,000 and imprisonment

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

If your bike damages another person's vehicle, building, or property in an accident, your comprehensive plan covers the repair or replacement cost up to Rs. 7.5 lakh per IRDAI regulation.

  • Covers damage to parked vehicles, compound walls, shop fronts, and gates

  • IRDAI cap of Rs. 7.5 lakh per incident, amounts above become your personal liability

  • Covers damage caused at any speed, in any road condition

  • A claim under this section does not impact your No Claim Bonus for own-damage cover

ComprehensiveOwn damageThird-party

Strengthen your comprehensive cover with add-ons

Three gaps in standard comprehensive insurance — engine damage, depreciation deductions, and consumables — can be closed with targeted add-ons at a very low additional cost. Engine Protect, Zero Dep, and Consumables cover are available when you buy or renew your ACKO comprehensive plan.

Add-ons available with comprehensive insurance

Choose from these valuable add-ons to enhance your comprehensive bike insurance coverage.

Zero depreciationPopular

starting at

₹36/year

Bumper-to-bumper protection

With this, you will be able to replace all damaged parts at the full cost, with no depreciation deduction. Without this, the insurers will deduct up to 50% from the cost of parts made from plastic or rubber, and you will have to make up the shortfall.

Expert tip: Plastic parts on a 3-year-old bike attract 30% depreciation. On a ₹40,000 fairing claim, that's ₹12,000 out of your pocket without zero dep.

Engine protectPopular

starting at

₹45/year

No more expensive repairs

It prevents hydrostatic lock and water ingress from damaging your engine, two of the biggest threats that a standard comprehensive bike policy doesn't cover.

Expert tip: A single hydrostatic lock repair after riding through a flooded road costs ₹20,000–₹80,000. Engine protection covers this from just ₹45/year.

Personal accidentPopular

starting at

₹350/year

Protection for what matters most

Gets up to ₹15 lakhs if the bike owner is permanently disabled or dies in the accident. The Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India has mandated that two-wheeler policies include this requirement in their terms and conditions.

Return to invoice

starting at

₹200/year

Get the full bike value back

In case of total loss or confirmed theft, receive the full on-road invoice amount instead of the depreciated IDV. Especially valuable for new bikes in the first 2 years.

What happens without comprehensive bike insurance?

Here are real-life examples showing how much money you could lose if you don't have comprehensive cover.

Road accident - major damage

You skid on wet roads and cause damage to your fairing, foot rest, and front forks. The cost of replacing all of these will be ₹45,000. Third-party insurance covers only the other person's damage, but not your bike's repair costs.

Without comprehensive (third-party only)

You pay ₹45,000

With ACKO comprehensive + ACKO claim

You pay ₹0

Bike stolen from basement parking

Your bike is stolen at night from either the basement parking or the roadside. The current market value (IDV) is ₹ 1,80,000. This represents the total amount you lose out on. The third-party insurance covers absolutely nothing regarding the loss or theft of your vehicle.

Without comprehensive insurance

You lose ₹1,80,000

With ACKO comprehensive + ACKO claim

You receive ₹1,80,000 IDV

Flood ingression - engine damage

The monsoon floods water into your engine, resulting in hydrostatic lock. The cost of repairing and rebuilding the engine comes to ₹28,000, to be paid out of your own pocket. Regular comprehensive policies do not cover engine damage caused by water ingress.

Without comprehensive + engine protect

You pay ₹28,000

With ACKO comprehensive + engine protect add-on

You pay ₹0

Accident injury - hospitalisation

In case of an accident that you suffer, and which leaves you hospitalised with severe injuries, you have to pay a whopping ₹85,000 for medical expenses out of your own pocket. Third-party insurance covers the loss of the third party, but never your own.

Without personal accident add-on

You pay ₹85,000

With ACKO comprehensive + personal accident

Frequently asked questions about comprehensive bike insurance

Comprehensive bike insurance consists of own damage and compulsory third party. This includes coverage against accidental damage, theft, fire, flood, earthquake, cyclone, manmade damage, rat-bite damage, and transport damage.
The third-party insurance will only cover injuries and damages you cause to other individuals. Comprehensive insurance, on the other hand, comes with own-damage coverage as well as other options, such as zero depreciation.
No, comprehensive bike insurance is not mandatory in India. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, only third-party liability insurance is legally required for all two-wheelers.
It is recommended that zero depreciation coverage, engine cover, and roadside assistance be included in your bike insurance plan because they provide protection against costly repairs.
Yes, comprehensive bike insurance covers theft and burglary. If your bike is stolen, the insurer pays the Insured Declared Value (IDV), which is the current market value of your bike after depreciation.
IDV in comprehensive bike insurance is calculated as the manufacturer's listed selling price of your bike minus depreciation based on its age. For a bike under 6 months old, depreciation is 5%; for 1–2 years, it is 20%; for 3–4 years, it is 40%; and for bikes older than 5 years, it is 50%.
Zero depreciation is an add-on for comprehensive bike insurance that pays the full replacement cost of damaged parts without any deduction for wear and tear. Without this add-on, standard policies deduct up to 50% from plastic and rubber parts and 10–40% from metal parts, leaving you to pay out of pocket.
The validity of comprehensive bike insurance for a new bike is 1 year for own damage and 5 years for third-party components. The validity period of comprehensive bike insurance for old motorcycles is one year.
Yes, comprehensive bike insurance is usually a better choice compared to an own damage (OD) policy since a comprehensive bike insurance protects not only your vehicle but also includes the third-party legal risk, which is mandatory, whereas an own damage (OD) policy alone would require you to purchase and carry a separate third-party insurance to be legal on the roads.
Your NCB will be secured if you renew your expired insurance policy within 90 days; otherwise, it will be entirely lost and reset to 0% if it has expired for more than 90 days.
